Service Projects – Communities working together
Houston Marine Mom Carol Murphy, wife of a Marine Viet Nam veteran, and mother to Pfc. Stephen and daughter Stephanie, shares this message. “It’s a pay it forward spirit. One yes is one smile from the person who will be opening up a care package.”

Carol and the entire Houston Marine Mom organization invite you to be part of these initiatives and help us make the holidays a little brighter for our troops this year. Please find below a list of our current service projects. Contact us today and let us know how you or your organization can help. Remember what Carol said…“One yes is one smile”.

HELP SUPPORT OUR TROOPS FROM GREMLINS

Have you noticed that some motorcycle riders have a bell hanging off their motorcycle frame or handlebars? Have your wondered what the purpose is?

The story goes like this… That little bell is more than decoration, it’s said they ward off “Gremlins”, also known as evil road spirits. Some say these evil road spirits are responsible for that driver in the minivan cutting the rider off in traffic. Or, all of a sudden the bike is having trouble shifting smoothly, the battery goes dead, an oil spill appears out of nowhere, the rider hits a patch of black ice, etc. Once the “Gremlin Bell” is on a bike the “Gremlins” get caught in the hollow of the bell and then fall to the road, keeping the rider safe.

The Houston Marine Moms have decided to apply this same concept to aid in the protection of our troops. If it works on motorcycles, surely it will work on other forms of equipment. Why not hang one of these miracle bells on Humvees, Apache Helicopters, Supply Trucks, Fighter Planes, Fire Trucks, and yes…..even Porta-Potties? The list is endless so let’s get started by putting a “Support Our Troops Gremlin Bell” on as many forms of equipment as we can.

The legend says that if you receive a bell as a gift its protection power is doubled. With your donations we can cover all sorts of equipment with protection for our troops and double the power. Contact us today to see how you can be part of this amazing project and cover our troops with protection by sending a “Gremlin Bell”.

PENNIES CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE....

If you mistakenly drop a penny, will you pause for a second to consider the effort that’s involved in picking it up? Will you leave it on the ground for someone else to pick up, eventually? Okay, you’ve paused long enough... pick it up and I’ll tell you how that penny can make a difference.
The Houston Marine Moms send out Girl Scout Cookies to our deployed service members each year. Last year we sent over 900 cases of donated cookies….that’s actually10,897 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies. Can you imagine 10,897 smiles? We can and the photos we’ve received from our troops prove it.
While the cookie donations have been tremendous, these donations add up to dollars. The rising cost of postage makes it increasingly harder each year to send these cookies to our troops. Now are you beginning to see how that little penny can make a difference?
With a little imagination on your part you can help us make those pennies grow. We’re asking you today to join forces with your local school, church or organization and organize a “pennies for postage” drive. Create a fun event for all having each classroom or the individuals within your organization participate in the competition. You’re pennies really will add up fast.
It’s easy, so bend over and pick up that penny. Don’t wait for someone else to beat you to it. Eight easy steps will get you started in the right direction.
1. Determine the type of competition
2. Set up a display (Example: photos of veterans or those currently serving)
3. Have a local veteran or current service member speak to your class or group
4. Arrange collection containers in strategic locations
5. Set a starting date and an ending date for your project
6. Write letters of appreciation to our troops and include photos and information about your project that we can include in the cookie packages
7. At the conclusion of the project, collect the total donations and put into a check, money order or cash
8. Contact a member of the Houston Marine Moms and share your pennies
It’s that simple and you’ll be amazed at how fast those pennies will grow. We’d be delighted to work with you on your project or talk to you further about it. With your help we can make a difference in the life of our service members.

TEXAS SAYS "HI" LETTERS

You can help by writing a “Thinking of You Letter” addressed to “Dear Marine”. These letters will be placed in care packages and sent to deployed military personnel. Include in your note a little about yourself, what area of town you live in and most important let them know they are supported by your community.
